Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learned the art of being a good instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to use the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just an elementary school student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of the jury. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
